DeWitt & Associates receives honors for Missouri State University Residence Hall Renovations

The Springfield Contractors Association named the Missouri State University residence hall renovations and the group of local designers and contractors who worked on the project 2011 Project Team of the Year.

“I think our project shows what the team spirit can do in a very limited time,” said Doug Sampson, university architect and director of planning, design and construction. “We did not have an option to extend the completion date. Our students were coming, and we had to be ready for them.

In only 66 working days, dedicated contractors, designers, construction workers, painters and more renovated seven residence halls and removed two buildings to update and refresh the facilities.

Renovations in the residence halls included:

  • Painting of more than 1,000,000 square feet of wall with over 3,000 gallons of paint
  • Installing more than 12 miles of vinyl base
  • Installing more than four acres of carpet
  • Replacing more than 1,050 doors
  • Removing and replacing more than 490 windows
  • Installing almost five miles of fire suppression piping
  • Installing 1,950 sprinkler heads
  • Installing more than 1,100 smoke detectors

“This project necessitated a project team that would work together. Each worked hard at making this a successful project,” said Sampson. “All this work was accomplished with more than 13,000 guests, or residents, living in these facilities during the construction period.”

The project team included Malone Finkle Eckhardt & Collins, Butler, Rosenbury & Partners, John McWilliams Architecture, LLC, Structural Engineering Associates, DeWitt & Associates and Missouri State University.

The Springfield chapter of the American Institutes of Architects also named three managers from DeWitt & Associates Superintendent of the Year for their work on the residence hall renovations and named Brent Cruse, a DeWitt & Associates carpenter, the Craftsman of the Year for his installation of wood panels in the Christopher S. Bond Learning Center at the Darr Agricultural Center.

DeWitt donates construction for Ronald McDonald House

In recognition of their 50th year in business and longstanding relationship with St. John’s, DeWitt & Associates is donating the majority of the cost to demo the area where the new Ronald McDonald House inside St. John’s hospital will be built. Other organizations donating to the project are the Laborer’s Local 663, Allied Waste Services, and Jerry Bumgarner Trucking. Laborer’s Local 663 is donating $8,000 to the cause. Allied Waste Services is donating 10 dumpster haul off charges.

Located next to what will become a new St. John’s pediatric intensive care unit, the Ronald McDonald House will help families of sick and injured children and high-risk maternity patients with both overnight stays and daytime visits, providing a “home away from home,” meals through the Family Dinner Program, laundry facilities, napping areas, e-mail access, quiet rooms for breast feeding and many more homelike services hosted by staff and volunteers who truly care.

Additionally, DeWitt is working with the Missouri Career Center to allow some disadvantaged young people the opportunity to work thru the holidays to improve their work experience and outlook for the future.

Sustainability in Education

The most recent LEED project that we can add to our list of experience is the Hickory Hills K-8 School. With sustainability always a part of the design process, the School Board decided to take the next step and pursue LEED certification. The project is designed to achieve the Silver category for Schools certification. The site has been designed as a whole, so that when the building and its exterior features are constructed they all work together to create a new ecosystem. This feature, and several others, will be utilized not only by the students and faculty, but will be a contribution to the community, making the new Hickory Hills K-8 School truly a public project.
