DeWitt Goes Green
DeWitt and Associates, Inc. is committed to keep current with the growing trends in the built environment. A major shift has been the emergence of “Green” or “Sustainable” building. Both terms refer to the practice of increasing the efficiency with which buildings use resources, while reducing negative impacts on human health and the environment.
With the rising cost of energy, owners are increasingly concerned with the operating expense of their buildings. Careful consideration of equipment and material selection can lead to a reduction in overall energy consumption. Installing finish materials that have low VOC’s help reduce sick building syndrome and lead to increased productivity. Green building practices seek to lower the impact on the environment through judicious site selection and development.
Created by the United States Green Building Council, the “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design System” (LEED), was created to encourage and facilitate the development of more sustainable buildings. Several Federal and State Government entities require that new construction projects attain LEED certification.
The recent renovation and addition to the Discovery Center in downtown Springfield by DeWitt was the first building to receive a LEED certification in Southwest Missouri. The project has been featured in Metal Architecture Magazine (March), Metal Architecture (June), Metal Mag (August) and several other publications. The Discovery Center helped launch a green-building trend throughout the Ozarks. As a member of the USGBC we are focused on acting as responsible stewards of our community.
